Covaxin vs Covishield

Manufacturers

Bharat Biotech produces COVAXIN

Serum Institute of India markets COVISHIELD (also known globally as Oxford-Astrazeneca)

Both have good, comparable efficacy rates which meet WHO standards. Covishield and Covaxin are traditional vaccines, which are developed in a somewhat similar manner.

Both of the vaccines are equally effective. Even if they do not fully prevent COVID infections, both Covishield and Covaxin have been known to cut down severity and mortality risk associated with the infection.

Efficacy rate

Covaxin Covishield
If you apply it in a phase 3 trial with Covaxin, it will have an effect of 78% – 100%. If you use this Covid injection, the effect is 70% -90%.
These injections are applied only to people above 18 years of age. Covishield can only be applied to people over 12 years of age.
This injection is administered to you in 4-6 weeks. You have to take two to two full weeks after 4–8 weeks of this second vaccination.

Covaxin Side Effects

Covaxin can be painful at the injection site, there may be swelling, there may be redness at the place of injection, there may also be dizziness and weakness, rashes all over the body are also likely to increase heartbeat.

There may be swelling on the throat and difficulty in breathing, allergic reaction, vomiting, nausea, malaise, fever, headache, body ache, pain in the arm on which the injection has been done, may also occur. Stiffness in the upper arm can have effects. But no clear information has been received about it yet.

Covishield Side Effects

After injecting Covishield, you may have pain at the injection site, may have headaches, may have joint pain, may feel like feverish, general feeling unwell, itching may also at the injection site, Swelling may also look like warmth and tenderness.

Who should get Covaxin?

Covaxin has been clinically proven to be well-effective against COVID-19, and may even work in preventing mutant variants from spreading. While the vaccine is a traditional model and carries reactogenic side-effects, case studies and data collected from vaccination so far have pointed out that of all vaccines, Covaxin delivers the least amount of side effects, such as fever, redness, chills or pain at the injection site.

For a person who is sensitive to pain, or worried about side effects, opting for Covaxin would be a safer option. It can also happen that the side effects are way milder and make your vaccination experience safer.
Covaxin also has a shorter dosing timeline, which means that the doses will be given 4-6 weeks apart. One can also base the decision accordingly, especially if they have future commitments, or more susceptible to COVID-19 risks.

Those with a history or a risk of blood clotting may also be advised to take Covaxin right now since blood clotting is a reported side-effect with Covishield. However, it is still considered to be a 'rare' after-effect.

Remember that side-effects may show up differently on everybody, and resolve in a while.

Older people, those using any form of blood-thinning medications may be advised to not take Covaxin. Remember to check the fact sheet and make an informed call.

Who should opt for Covishield?

Covishield was one of the first vaccines approved for use and primarily used in India, since January 2021. While it too is a traditional vaccine, younger people, opting for the Oxford-Astrazeneca jab tend to feel more intense side effects than those who get Covaxin.

Several reports also mention that Covishield showcases more immunogenic response (hence, making the way for more side effects).

Covishield is primarily offered to older people or those with serious comorbidities. Those between 18-45 should also keep their health parameters in mind before signing up for the vaccine.

Talking of the benefits, Covishield mounts more antibodies, in comparison to Covaxin (even though their efficacy rates weigh similarly). Those with frail immunity may hence consider taking this vaccine.

Top 15 generics up substantially

Drug spending in the U.S. is projected to reach $590 billion by 2020, up from $337 billion in 2015, according to insurance industry group America’s Health Insurance Programs (AHIP). Increased sharing of discounts and other actions aimed at lowering prices will reduce profits for Biopharmas, as well as shrink how much they ultimately generate in sales from their therapies.

The 15 top-selling drugs generated $10.659 billion—which means that its sales have nearly doubled, rocketing almost 73%, in the past five years.

Nine of last year’s 15 top-selling drugs saw year-over-year sales gains, with five of the nine registering double-digit increases (and a sixth coming close at 9.4%).  The rest of the list saw sales declines since 2016, most often reflecting the launch of generic competitors or insurer discounts.
